Cold Weather Hydration
Especially in Colorado where the air is so dry, it can be very easy to let dehydration sneak in. As the temperatures drop and your sense of thirst does too, hydration can be difficult to stay ahead of. However, maintaining adequate fluid intake is just as crucial during the winter months as it is in the summer. Here are some tips to help you stay hydrated and healthy throughout the colder season:
• Build hydration habits: Set reminders to sip on water or other hydrating beverages throughout your day. Carry a reusable water bottle with you and keep it within sight to encourage regular drinking.
• Warm your beverages: Warm beverages like herbal teas, broth soups, and hot chocolate (without too much added sugar) can also contribute to your daily fluid intake. Hydration doesn’t have to be just water!
• Hydrate with Food: Incorporate water-rich fruits and vegetables into your diet. Fruits like oranges, strawberries, and watermelon, and vegetables like cucumbers, spinach, and celery, can provide a significant boost of hydration.
• Pay attention to your urine: Your urine color can serve as a simple hydration indicator. Aim for light like lemonade urine as an indicator of proper hydration. If your urine is dark like apple juice, this is a sign you need to increase your fluid intake.
• Listen to Thirst Cues: Thirst is your body's natural signal that it needs fluids. Don't wait until you're parched to start drinking. Heed your body's cues and quench your thirst regularly.
Remember, staying hydrated is essential for overall health and well-being, regardless of the season. By following these tips, you can ensure that your body stays hydrated and performing at its best throughout the winter months.
